 -Alvo News-

Ann (Walla) Wells, a former Alvo resident takes an interest in her childhood community. Mrs. Wells intends to gift a $500 scholarship to a high school senior and resident of Alvo to be used for College, Junior College, Art School, or Trade School. The recipient does not need to have a certain grade point average, just a desire to continue their education or learn a trade. Also, to qualify the recipient would need to write about growing up in Alvo; the good, the bad, and the ugly, anything that applies to their circumstance and experience and send it directly to Mrs. Wells at This email address is being protected from spambots. Mrs. Wells would like to reflect and share with you, "The last year we lived In Alvo we rode a bus to Eagle schools. I am 69 now but still recall those days! We lived across the street from Connie and Steve, Elliott and Carl, and Gordy Ganz lived on the farm at the end of the street. Mrs. Dinges lived right behind us, she was a special lady. I Hope someone there remembers her and her big asparagus patch! In those days if we needed to make a long-distance call we had to go to the operator's house, she had a pet skunk. House phones were wooden and we had to crank the handle then and tell the operator which 3 or 4 digit number we wanted in town. There was a little country store on the main road and a family-owned restaurant on that road too. There was an old abandoned gas station on the main corner with still standing gas pumps with glass bulbs on top. My brother and I fished in a little pond that led to town. I have a lot of good memories but some are not so happy as I didn't always fit into the clique. I now live in Danville, Illinois with my husband of 51 years. We have 2 children and 5 grandchildren, 3 of them are married but no great-grandchildren as of yet. We have always been self-employed and our children and grandchildren are the same. I can say I have had a happy and satisfying life. The stories I could tell about Alvo! Maybe I should write a book."
