Robert (Bob) Hanes was fatally injured when a compact pickup crossed the center line, striking the Weeping Water Rescue ambulance he was driving nearly head on. His daughter, Melissa and James (Beau) Flint, Jr. who were attending a patient were both seriously injured.
Bob died in the line of duty, serving as a firefighter with Weeping Water Volunteer Fire Department. The Nebraska Serious Injury and Line of Duty Death Response Team is organizing the memorial ceremonies for Bob.
While Bob is lying in state, his brothers and sisters of the fire and rescue family will stand honor guard 24 hours a day. Fire apparatus and ambulances from many departments will honor him in the funeral procession from the service to the cemetery. For bringing apparatus or standing honor guard click on the link above for contact details.
His memorial service will be held at 1000 Monday, June 17th at Round the Bend Steakhouse, 30801 East Park Highway with inurnment at the Alvo Cemetery.
I will be adding my thoughts on Wednesday in the newsletter. For now give your thoughts, prayers and support to his wife Carol, daughter Melissa, stepson (who Bob raised) Shawn Hammons, daughter-in-law Jenny Hammons, sons Josh, Bobby, daughter-in-law Sara, all the grandkids he loved and the rest of Bob's family.
The motto of the USAF Air Rescue and Recovery Service is " .....that others may live". That applied to Bob and applies to all our fire and rescue members, career or volunteer. We are all hurting right now, but are still responding to those in need.
