Some thoughts for Veterans' Day 2016...

Don't bother saying "Thank you for your service." I personally don't need that. Do something tangible - lay a wreath on a forgotten vet's grave...16wreath1

Give a vet a job or help him or her find one. Volunteer at a vet's center or homeless shelter. Hold our state and federal representatives' feet to the fire and get the Veterans' Administration squared away. We need to take care of our own first.

Here's one of our own - Shon Olson, Commandant of the Department of Nebraska Marine Corps League. In addition to his family, job, League work, Shon is our Assistant Fire Chief.

Abnormally dry area more than doubled - northwest third of the panhandle, south central and central Nebraska are really drying out. Moderate drought areas almost tripled, although severe drought area remains the same. I'm typing this on Monday night and in the west part of Cass County, gentle rain is the name of the game. If it stays warmer than normal this fall and winter, I will go out on a limb and say we might see some drought in 2017.
