alvo news, october 26th, 2016

A horrible tragedy occurred last week, with an entire family dying in a house fire near Weeping Water. John and Michelle Speer, their 4 daughters, Ellie, Addilyn, Emma, and Anniston died of smoke inhalation. Weeping Water, Manley, Avoca, Murray, Nehawka and Murdock Fire departments responded along with Cass County Sheriff's Department, Cass County EMA and Nebraska State Fire Marshal investigators. The investigation showed the fire started near the fireplace in the living room and spread to carpet and furniture. Witnesses indicated the home was equipped with smoke detectors, but none of them were recovered, so no one knows if they were functional.

If they don't alarm, replace the batteries and if the detectors are over 10 years old, replace them. If you have a fireplace, clean the chimney. We do not want any fire deaths here. Support not only family and friends but the firefighters, emergency medical technicians and law enforcement who are hurting as well.

What we have here is that when it's drying enough to harvest, then the abnormally dry areas increase in size - almost 0.2 %. Click on the upper picture for the whole country and on the lower one for the Nebraska page. In case you didn't notice on the site, 44,345 people live in the drought areas. If 15% of Nebraska's 45.3 million farm land is abnormally dry or worse, that means over 683,000 acres need moisture. With the 2014 average farm size of 921 acres over 740 farms are affected by dry conditions.
