September 29th, 1962 -President Kennedy nationalized the Mississippi National guard in response to city officials defying federal court orders. The orders had been to enroll James Meredith at the University of Mississippi.

September 30th, 1954 - The Navy commissioned the USS Nautilus submarine at Groton, CT. It was the first atomic-powered vessel. The submarine had been launched on January 21, 1954. Admiral Hyman G. Rickover was responsible for the development of nuclear powered ships.
