History or hysteria? You be the judge.....

June 29th, 2011 - The state of Nevada passed the first law that permitted the operation of autonomous cars on public roads. The law went into effect on March 1, 2012 and did not permit the use of the cars to the general public. Google received the first self-driving vehicle license in the U.S. on May 4, 2012 in Nevada.

"Google is working on self-driving cars and they seem to work. People are so bad at driving cars that computers don't have to be that good to be much better." - Marc Andreessen

June 30th, 1986 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that states could outlaw homosexual acts between consenting adults.

"I remember in 'Law of Desire', where I played a homosexual, that people were more upset that I kissed a man on the mouth than I killed a man. It's interesting to see how people can pardon you for killing a man, but they can't pardon you for kissing one." - Antonio Banderas

July 1st, 1961 - The first community air-raid shelter was built. The shelter in Boise, ID had a capacity of 1,000 people and family memberships sold for $100. Click HERE for the web site.

"In 1960, the population of Boise was 151,122 - using 3.67 as the average family size (Statista, 1960 data) was 3.67. That means 40,178 (91.1%) families did not have access to the shelter." - Dave

July 2nd, 1947 - An object crashed near Roswell, NM. The US Army Air Force insisted it was a weather balloon, but eyewitness accounts led to speculation that it might have been an alien spacecraft.

"We were naturally anxious to get hold of one of the [UFOs]. We told pilots to do practically anything in reason, even if they had to grab one by the tail." - Major Jeremiah Boggs, U.S. Air Force  (Note: a recent visitor has complained that this quote misrepresents Boggs. Let it be known that Boggs was an “anti-UFO” guy.)

July 3rd, 1790 - In Paris, the marquis of Condorcet proposed granting civil rights to women.

“Men should think twice before making widowhood women's only path to power.” - Gloria Steinem

July 4th, 2009 - The Statue of Liberty's crown reopened to visitors. It had been closed to the public since 2001.

July 5th, 1946 - The bikini bathing suit, created by Louis Reard, made its debut during a fashion show at the Molitor Pool in Paris. Micheline Bernardini wore the two-piece outfit.

"Woman's logic: Bikini = no problem Bra and underwear = OMG, don't look!" - Unknown

"Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don't vote." - William E. Simon
