alvo news, march 23rd, 2016

Sorry this is late - was up till 0300 this morning at a rural house fire. A big thank you to Eagle, Murdock, Elmwood and Greenwood for their timely response. We are lucky to have these dedicated volunteers who quickly respond to emergencies in Cass County.

A fast moving fire at their rural home outside Alvo Tuesday night caused John and Deb to escape with little more than the clothes they had on. Area volunteers were on scene until after 0300 on Wednesday. When the fire crews leave, the fire isn't over. Now John and Deb have to rebuild and recover their lives.

You can help - donate to the McNaught Relief Fund opened by the American Exchange Bank at 151 North 4th Street in Elmwood, NE 68349. More details to come. What makes this part of the county special is that we help one another.

Insurance news - as of June 1st, 2016, Alvo's ISO (Insurance Services Office, Inc.) Public Protection Classification will be set at 6 for those owning business or personal property in the Village limits. When renewing home or business insurance, let your carrier know - it may possibly reduce your fire protection premium.

STILL no dry areas in the entire state - great news. As long as precipitation stays normal, we should be in good shape for crops, animals and people. Click HERE for the national NOAA Climate Prediction site and HERE for the Omaha site. Just a point to ponder - although earth is a water planet, only 0.0078% of that water is available to sustain plant, animal and human life. On the sidewalk lay heaps of broken bodies. A policeman later went about with tags, which he fastened with wires to the wrists of the dead girls, numbering each with a lead pencil, and I saw him fasten tag no. 54 to the wrist of a girl who wore an engagement ring. A fireman who came downstairs from the building told me that there were at least fifty bodies in the big room on the seventh floor. Another fireman told me that more girls had jumped down an air shaft in the rear of the building. I went back there, into the narrow court, and saw a heap of dead girls. . . .” - William G. Shepard
