Last week a bit more of the land area in the state became abnormally dry. Farmers in this end of the state except for the four extreme southeast counties don't have a lack of moisture problem. In some cases, fields are get stuck wet in the low spots.  The only good news is that there are no moderate drought areas, YET. October 7th, 1996 - Fox News Channel begins broadcasting. - Opinions took over from facts in their reporting.

October 7th  is Bald and Free Day.

October 8th, 1871 - The Great Chicago Fire begins in southwest Chicago, possibly in a barn owned by Patrick and Katherine O’Leary. Fanned by strong southwesterly winds, the flames raged for more than 24 hours, eventually leveling three and a half square miles and wiping out one-third of the city. Approximately 250 people were killed in the fire; 98,500 people were left homeless; 17,450 buildings were destroyed.

2001 - US President George W. Bush establishes the Office of Homeland Security.

October 8th is American Touch Tag Day. - Honest, I don't make these up.

October 9th, 1999 - Last flight of the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" stealth reconnaissance aircraft. - My squadron commander at McChord flew the YF-12 version and set speed and altitude records in it.

October 9th is Curious Events, Fire Prevention, Lief Erickson, Moldy Cheese and World Egg (second Friday of the month) Day.

October 10th, 1973 - Spiro Agnew resigns the vice presidency amid accusations of income tax evasion. President Richard Nixon names Gerald Ford as the new vice president. Agnew is later convicted and sentenced to three years probation and fined $10,000.- What a group of losers.

October 10th is National Angel Food Cake Day.

October 11th, 1972 -- A French mission in Vietnam is destroyed by a U.S. bombing raid. - This was before Doctors Without Borders and GPS.

1975 - Saturday Night Live comedy-variety show premiers on NBC, with guest host comedian George Carlin and special guests Janis Ian, Andy Kaufman and Billy Preston; at this writing (2015) the show is still running.
