Week Three - Good and Bad
First the bad - West VFD lost 5 volunteer firefighters & 2 honorary firefighter; Abbott VFD lost 2 volunteers; Navarro Hills VFD lost 1; Bruceville-Eddy VFD lost 1; Dallas FD lost 1 when the local fertilizer plant caught fire and exploded while the responders were fighting the fire. West, Texas has a population of 2800 (20 times the size of Alvo). Their volunteer department has 33 members, we have 9. Not many here in Nebraska have paid much attention to this, because of the event at the Boston Marathon. (163 people injured, and at least 5 civilians killed in West). Again, here in the heartland, we can feel removed from a disaster because it happened a long distance away. Just like we do in Cass County, mutual aid departments responded to this fire and explosion. 8 firefighters and 4 EMS members gave the ultimate for their community.

They raised half the money for a new fire station in 2003 with fund-raising events such as their annual BBQ Cookoff - Alvo Fire and Rescue members contributed labor and materials for our new station in 2006. We raise money with a Pancake Breakfast and a Car Show. They have a web site http://www.cityofwest.com/city-services/west-fire-dept - so do we.

The good - RAIN! Unofficially - 2.9 inches in the editor's front yard - maybe our baby catalpa tree will survive. Farmers are going to have late corn and soybean planting, but southeast of here, the soil is fully saturated to 4 feet. Word from the weather guessers is that it's going to be warm starting Thursday and then get really warm. At least it didn't snow last night. Our lonely daffodil bloom is still bravely looking good after a week of cold and really cold.
I need events for the calendar - so far, only one response. Please give me information or I will make stuff up! And I have a very vivid and creative imagination!
Message from your Lagoon Operator and the Village Board
PLEASE! PLEASE! Do NOT flush "baby wipes" or any "flushable wipes" even though they are labeled "flushable" - they are not. If we have to do more maintenance on our sewer lines, sewage rates will go up for all of us.
See you at the Alvo Fire and Rescue Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning and at the Alvo School gathering on Saturday night.
The village phone no longer switches to fax after only 2 rings - leave a non-profane message. And yes, we have caller ID.
