Jury Duty Scam in Cass County

More information on the scam we brought to your attention on Monday: The Cass County Sheriff's Office and the Plattsmouth Police Department have been receiving reports throughout Cass County from citizens reporting a scam involving Failure to Appear for Jury Duty, and of an active arrest warrant being issued for them. The caller has identified himself as a Sergeant Billy Matthews, Captain Billy Matthews, Captain Marsh, and most recently Lieutenant Steve Avery. The suspect will inform the person they missed their court appearance for Federal Jury Duty in Plattsmouth, and now there is a warrant for their arrest, and the only way to avoid it would be to pay a fine. The person will be told by the suspect to purchase Green Dot Money cards and to call the suspect back. The telephone number being used is (402) 200-8280, which is a wireless Verizon cell phone. The last information on January 7, 2015, the suspect told potential victims if the person hangs up the phone, Lt. Avery will come out to their address and arrest them, along with putting a lock on their bank funds.

PLEASE DO NOT BE A VICTIM TO THESE SCARE TACTICS.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office DOES NOT call people who have outstanding arrest warrants. The Cass County Sheriff's Office will show up at the person's door step unannounced to serve the arrest warrant. There are no courtesy phone calls. Our deputies will be in full uniform identifying themselves as such. There will be no exchange of money unless conducted at the Cass County Sheriff's Office, and this will be CASH only. The Cass County Sheriff's Office and Corrections Center does not use Western Union Money Gram or any prepaid credit cards such as Green Dot when a person is arrested.

I was going to put a sarcastic graphic here, but I'm trying to be more positive this year.....

Just a reminder - nothing is ever deleted from the site - if you click on the various tabs and pulldowns, you can find everything!

Want to contribute? If you have something you would like to write about and see it published here, let me know.

Just a couple of rules - 1. I will not publish anonymous stuff; 2. Don't use profanity - I have served in the military and worked with all US branches and several foreign air forces - so I probably know more bad words than you do

The deadline is noon on Tuesday so I have time to edit and include it in the Wednesday news.

Your contribution will be appreciated very much.
