So it's 2015.... Now what?

Alvo is 125 years old this year so we will be looking closely at our history and a small group is planning our celebration - Saturday, June 6th, 2015. The group needs more members. The first meeeting of 2015 was held Monday night at 6:00 PM at the Fire & Rescue Station. Present were Pat Umland, Alvo's Historian and Trish Eaton, born here, but Alaskan at heart. Deb Kirkpatrick and Annette Dougherty were unable to attend due to grandkids. All community events in 2015 will be tied to our Quasquicentennial year. The usual events start in March with the Methodist Church Country Music Festival, the annual Fire Department Pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 25th. That same evening the Alvo Consolidated School Annual Banquet will be held at the Fire  & Rescue Station. Q-Day will be Saturday, June 6th. The 14th Annual Fire Department Car Show will be Saturday, August, also with a pancake breakfast and lunch. (The Alvo Church Basement Ladies will be selling their gourmet desserts.) The year will close out in October with the Alvo Methodist Church Soup Supper. The group needs more members! Planning of Q-Day will take effort: tentatively there will be a turn of the century menu brunch; historic vehicle parade; free vintage movies (black & white) and an evening meal. The next meeting of the Q-Group will be Monday, February 2nd at 7:00 PM at the Fire & Rescue Station. Bring your energy and ideas - please!

Slowly, slowly the days are longer.

New legislature, new governor - same old problems that the last bunch didn't solve. Our state is one of the most socially conservative in the country, and we have the motto "Visit Nebraska. Visit Nice."

Still no change in amount of abnormally dry area in Nebraska - that's two weeks in a row.

Here's the rest of the country

Notice the yellow north of the Missouri River - south of Nebraska is much worse and southwest US is really, really dry.

Just as an aside, Tuesday the 6th, Nebraska Public Radio interviewed  some new and returning state senators and the governor asking  what their priorities would be in this session - NONE of them mentioned water conservation or drought mitigation.

Where the heck is Alvo and what's happened over the years?

The Salem Church building was moved to Alvo in 1891 and became the Alvo Methodist Episcopal Church - that's 124 years in our community.

50 years ago, Western Feeders 4-H Club was formed. In 2014, Lynn and Carleen Dowding were awarded 40 year 4-H leader pins.Alvo Fire Department
