Tonight is New Year's Eve...
How about we all do better this coming year?
"Cheers to a new year, another chance to get it right." - Oprah Winfrey
"Ring out the false, ring in the true." - Alfred Lord Tennyson
Those of you who will ring in the new year with your favorite libation - please be aware of these numbers from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. For 2013, December had the fourth highest number of alcohol related crashes, while January was the sixth highest. For 2012, 87 of the 212 crash fatalities involved alcohol (over 0.01%) while in 2013, 70 of the 211 crash fatalities were alcohol related. How about using a designated driver - that improves your chances of celebrating New Year's Eve in December 2015. If you see any rescue squad members this evening or early tomorrow morning, you are probably not going to be happy. And if you're not hurt, you'll probably go to a special place if you are the impaired driver.
How about some driving safety quotes - not just for tonight and tomorrow...
"It takes several thousand bolts and screws to assemble an automobile and one nut to scatter them all over the road." - Unknown
"Education is important, but we're to the point where almost everyone knows they shouldn't drink and drive. The people who are still doing it are choosing to do it. The most effective way to deal with them is to arrest them." ~ David Kelly, 2002
"Leave sooner, drive slower, live longer." - Unknown
"Texting while driving results in longer response times than even drunken driving. While an unimpaired driver can respond quickly to changes in traffic and begin braking within half a second, a legally drunk driver needs four additional feet to begin braking—and a driver who's texting needs 70." ~ Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
"Drinking and driving: there are stupider things, but it's a very short list." ~ Author Unknown
The sun comes up at the same time this week, but takes longer to set...

Personal Note from the Murray Editor...
During this season of love and generosity, I feel the need to share this tragic story. Amber Gray is my cousin's grand-daughter. Amber just celebrated her 14-year birthday at Thanksgiving time. Three and a half weeks later, at the beginning of Christmas week, she was still a healthy, happy young girl. Overnight, what was thought to possibly be strep throat was quickly diagnosed as influenza, type 'A'.
Sadly, one bad turn after another occurred and on Christmas day, while everyone else was celebrating the joy of the season with loved ones, Amber's heart stopped. The 'paddles' briefly brought it back to its job of pumping life through her young body, but on December 28th, Amber lost the fight.
Now, after 6 days in the hospital and with pending funeral expenses, Amber's parents are facing a huge financial burden. (Amber has a little brother, Aidan, too.) Please visit the link below, where Amber's uncle, Adam Broman, has set up a campaign to help. Amber's folks would be grateful for any donation you might feel in your heart to help with and it would be sincerely appreciated.

No change in soil moisture from the previous week. I hate snow as much as anyone, but unless we can go without eating, soil moisture levels need to improve, not just hold their own.
