Senator Johanns e-Update
November 19, 2014
As we prepare to celebrate the holidays with our friends and families, we must not forget the men and women in uniform whose bravery and sacrifice allow us to celebrate freely. The holidays can be a particularly trying time for our armed forces and their loved ones. I’m pleased to once again team up with the American Red Cross to encourage participation in Holiday Mail for Heroes. The program asks citizens to sign cards to members of the military, thanking them for their service and wishing them a happy holiday season.
To participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, you can make arrangements to mail or drop off cards by calling my Lincoln office at (402) 476-1400 by Monday, December 8, 2014. The cards will then be distributed by the American Red Cross in Omaha.
Matt from Senator Johanns' Lincoln office says to sign the card(s) and add any personal messages, put the card in the envelope and place all of them in a large manila envelope (you don't need stamps on the card envelopes) and send or take them to:

A note from your editor - in 9 years of active duty, spending Christmas on duty for 7 of those years, neither I or any of the other Air Force men and women stationed with me ever got anything from our home state senators or representatives. So, get up off your burro, get some cards and make some troop in the sand, a scope dope at a remote radar site, a squid in a submarine 200 feet under water, feel a little bit better this Christmas.
A little snow, a lot of cold.....
It may not be winter by the calendar, but mother nature doesn't use calendars. A year ago, the minimum temperature was 26.1 deg F and the maximum was 59 deg F. The high today is predicted to be 30 deg F. The average high for November is 51 and the average low is 28. The prediction is for some gradual warming for the weekend then back to the freezing for Thanksgiving. And people living in Florida think 40 degrees is cold. Once again, use a lot of caution - the roads will be wet in the daytime, but turn back to ice and snow covered when the temperature drops. The same thing applies to sidewalks and steps - if you've fallen and can't get up outside, you'll be quite stiff by morning. If you live alone, a medical alert system could save your life.
One thing nice about this nasty weather - it seems to keep people from needing EMS assistance.
