Independence Day 2014
Our Independence Day celebration has been an inspiration to other colonies, territories and people around the world. I've included as many of the week's events that I could find that relate to independence usually from European countries and, unfortunately, from our own United States. Click on the "Which country..." link above for details.
Having heard and seen serious fireworks when I worked for my Uncle Samuel, I personally am not a fan of buying stuff that disappears with noise, causes fires and removes fingers, toes and eyes. Although buying fireworks is in the tradition of our munitions industry, our dogs really aren't fans either. If you are a fan, be very, very, careful or you may see what the inside of an emergency room looks like.
“As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality” — George Washington
“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one” — Benjamin Franklin
“July 4. Statistics show that we lose more fools on this day than in all the other days of the year put together. This proves, by the number left in stock, that one fourth of July per year is now inadequate, the country has grown so.” — Mark Twain
"A statistician made a few calculations and discovered that since the birth of our nation more lives had been lost in celebrating independence than in winning it." ~Curtis Billings

Although his address is Lincoln, Dudley Whitson was a familiar sight in Alvo, often seen working in his yard and turning fallen trees into firewood. Dudley, 66, died suddenly on Saturday, June 28th. He is survived by fiancee Cindy Hicks of Alvo; daughter, Michelle and son-in-law Darius Michaels; brother Dean; many grandkids and loved ones. Preceded in death by his parents and his furbaby Skip. There will be no services. Memorials to the Patriot Guard Riders for the veterans they protect and respect. Rest in peace, neighbor.
