Snow, Sun, Freezing Rain, Sun - It must be getting close to spring in Alvo

Don't let the days of 40's and 50's fool you, it still freezes at night - Monday, over 100 people were treated at Omaha hospitatls for injuries from falling on the snow-coverd ice.

No one in Alvo had a problem with standing up on the ice Monday - maybe we're not as unaware of Mother Nature as folks in Omaha - I'm just saying.

Anyway, the weather is predicted to continue the ups and downs with possible freezing rain and snow mix Wednesday night and cold weather this weekend.

It's nice to be retired - might try to see if any of the local golf courses are open before the weekend. Fore!

The Nebraska Democratic Party will allow non-partisan independent voters to vote for Democratic candidates for state office in the May primary election. Until now, registered independents could only vote for non-partisan state and local candidates in primaries. Independent voters will be allowed to obtain a Democratic ballot and vote for those candidates. The state Republican Party has no plans to allow independents to vote a Republican ballot. Click on the Journal Star link below for the rest of the story.

Being in the minority as a registered independent in Cass County, I like being able to cast my vote for the partisan offices in primary elections - wish the Republicans would do the same. LB 773, introduced by Davis, 43; Cook, 13; Crawford, 45; Dubas, 34; Kolowski, 31; Schumacher, 22; Seiler, 33; Sullivan,41; Wallman, 30 which will be debated Thursday would change state law to allow independent voters to request a partisan ballot in Nebraska primary elections.

Republican 8,061
Democrat 4,836
Libertarian 72
Nonpartisan 3,721
Americans Elect 4
Total 16,694

There are 18120 people in Cass County eligible to register and vote - 92 % of us are registered to vote - but in the 2012 primary only 26.2% voted, which means a minority of the voters selected the candidates for the general election. 72.1% of those eligible voted in the general election, which means 36.1 % of the voters in the county decided who was going to represent us in the local, state and federal government.
