Thanks to Karen for the Nebraska State flag - it will fly until March 1st, 2018 to celebrate Nebraska 150.

Wonder what the piles of wood chips are for next to the water tower? They are for you if you need mulch for your trees, gardening or landscaping. They are from the trees being removed along Highway 63 as part of the Alvo North reconstruction project. Thank the Nebraska Department of Roads for donating them to the people in Alvo.

Let's be careful out there - it's fertilizer, tillage and planting season.

March is also the time when farm equipment is going to be on the roads and highways.

Basic Rules about farm equipment versus cars and pickups:

1. They're a lot heavier than your Prius.

2. They travel much slower than your Dodge Ram with the chip.

3. The tractor and the equipment are much wider than your Cadillac.

4. Field entrances aren't marked.

5. And most important - if you hit farm equipment, you'll lose.

Now it's getting worse - this week almost 41% of the state is in abnormally dry or moderate drought condition. All the Kansas border counties are partially or completely abnormally dry. Southwest counties are suffering moderate drought. There is hope for some rain, but for the last few years, rain has been spotty all over the state. Click on the map for the whole country.

OK - these two cartoons are my Editor's take for this week. Both were drawn in 2005, but they sure fit the Vietnam War as well as 2017. Both of them were drawn by Adam Zyglis for the Buffalo Tribune. Mr. Zyglis, a salute from a veteran for telling the story of how the politicians really don't care about those of us in the green and brown and blue suits some of whom gave all and are giving all for their country. That is why on March 2nd of 2018, the American flag will be joined by the POW/MIA flag in front of our fire station.
