Dec 28th, 1973 - The Chamber of Commerce of Akron, OH, terminated its association with the All-American Soap Box Derby. It was stated that the race had become "a victim of cheating and fraud."

Dec 29th, 1890 - The US Seventh Cavalry massacred over 400 men, women and children at Wounded Knee Creek, SD. This was the last major conflict between Indians and US troops.

Jan 1st, 1999 - The euro became currency for 11 Member States of the European Union. Coins and notes were not available until January 1, 2002.

Jan 2nd, 1974 - President Nixon signed a bill requiring all states to lower the maximum speed limit to 55 MPH. The law was intended to conserve gasoline supplies during an embargo imposed by Arab oil-producing countries. Federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.
